The Newham.net site is a "gateway" to sites created in and/or about Newham.
If you live, work or study in Newham you can submit a personal site providing
your site makes reference to Newham.. Any business, voluntary organisation or
public body based in Newham can submit a site. Sites that do not emanate from
Newham may be acceptable if the content is directly relevant to Newham
and Newham is specifically mentioned on the site.
We do not list Adult sites and Newham.net users are asked to report any Adult material
that they find linked to directly from the Gateway site and this may result in
the removal of the link from the database.
Please note that only sites established by an organisation can normally be
listed in any part of the index other than the personal home pages. Any entry
that has a URL of type name.org.uk, name.gov.uk, name.ac.uk, name.co.uk,
name.org, name.com and name.net will be presumed to represent an organisation
providing the site includes a "real world" contact address. Any URL that is
not of this type eg name.virgin.net may be asked to provide proof of its
organisational status before the entry is accepted..
The categorization of sites is based on the schema used by the Open
Directory Project so as to enhance ease of transfer of information to this
international effort. The main difference is that the database we use does not
permit sub categories to appear under more than one heading so arbitrary
decisions have had to be made. The sub headings will be implemented only as
need dictates with normally at least three entries of a type being entered
before the sub category is created.
<Top>
Regional artistic, cultural, and entertainment activities, events,
institutions, organizations, etc. Dance, Libraries, Museums, Movies, Music,
Photography, Theatre. All "events" guides and listings should be entered
here. <Top>
Most sites here will be name.co.uk or name.com. Local businesses, business
associations and services for businesses to be included. If a business site has
eCommerce capability it can be listed both here and in Shopping Online. Business
related training offered by, say, a College, should be listed under Education
and Learning as should a private sector training company. Any business can
choose to enter itself here or in another category which fits it more
specifically.
Books, Cars, Car Rentals, Classifieds, Clothing, Economic Development,
Employment, Event Planning (Conventions, Weddings), Financial Services,
Industries (Construction and Maintenance, Financial Services, Legal Services,
Publishing), Jewellery, Legal Services, Property, Restaurants and Bars,
Shopping, Tour Operators, Travel Services, Travel Agents
<Top>
Web designers, computer consultants, online communities. Training in this
area should be listed under Education and Learning not here. This will be
categorized as and when necessary. <Top>
This category covers a very wide range of activities including
all religious material and sites focusing on a particular cultural group such as
Newham Tamils. It also includes politics including the sites of local political
parties.

promotes learning whether they be academic, private, voluntary or public sector.

Adult Education, Colleges, Educational Services, Home Schooling, Learning
Online, Primary Schools, Secondary Schools, University, Vocational
Training,
<Top>
6. Government (all .gov &
.gov.uk home pages)
If is has a ."name.gov.uk" URL it should be listed here.
However the dividing lines between what is and is not Government is tricky
thanks to the existence of "quangos". If it has Council staff or public servants
then it should be here. Sites that are of type "name.co.uk" or "name.com" should
not be here.
Please note that the sites of political parties should be listed under
Culture and Society and not here. <Top>
Local hospitals, organisations focusing on health and disability including
self help groups. Includes governmental services such as Environmental
Health.
AIDS, Alternative Medicine, Associations, Care Providers, Conditions and
Diseases, Consultants, Counselling Services, Dentistry, Emergency Services,
Hospitals, Mental Health, Psychologists, Self Help. <Top>
Local history sites, an exception to the "organisation only" rule may be made
for substantial local history sites run by individuals. <Top>
Do it yourself, gardening, decorating, pets and children. Does not include
personal family sites which should go under "Personal Homepages" nor does it
include estate agents and mortgages which should go under Business. <Top>
Sites offering jobs or help to find jobs. Can simply be a link to one page on
a site that is used to advertise for staff. <Top>
Sites where place is the most important issue unless that place is Newham in
which case it should be listed elsewhere. This is NOT the place for sites that
cover Newham as a whole . Forest Gate, East Ham, Lee valley and any site that is
primarily about a particular locality should be here. <Top>
Ideally this category should be empty. It is primarily for use by people
submitting sites that do not obviously fit anywhere else. <Top>
Local newspapers, radio and TV news. <Top>
All sites run by individuals rather than organisations whatever their
content. If the content is mainly about a particular issue, for instance
cycling, then providing the link description includes this fact it will be found
by people searching links for this topic. <Top>
For sites about hobbies and interests as well as for West Ham
Football club. Sites primarily selling sports related products should go in the
Business category and not here. <Top>
Directories (such as the http://www.newham.net/ site), Libraries and in
general sites that have large lists of information that people would only look
at when trying to find something specific. <Top>
Mainly academic departments though can include technology based businesses
providing not already listed under "Computing and Internet" The environment
topics include Agriculture, Parks, Wildlife, Birds, Zoos as well as pressure
groups. <Top>
This category is for online shopping and only includes sites that support
this. Sites run by shops that do not have an online shopping capability should
be entered under "business and finance". <Top>
Sites relating to travel and tourism in Newham.. This can
include any local attraction or facility specifically providing service to
tourists coming to Newham as well as local services for residents wishing to
travel elsewhere. London City Airport is an obvious example and any local hotel
or B&B should also be listed here.

Roads, Tourist attraction, Traffic, Taxis, Tour Operators, Travel Agents, Travel
Guides

organisation working in the health field should be listed under Health not here.
This section does not include churches which should go under culture and
society.
Charities, Community groups, Housing organisations, Tenants
associations <Top>
